Overview | This course will provide participants with information on complex mental health diagnoses and how these can impact individuals. Participants will then explore how to initiate a conversation about mental health to support someone, whilst also keeping themselves safe and maintaining boundaries. This course is for those predominantly in health and social care roles, front facing support roles, and any roles which involve an element of customer or service-user support. |
Aims & objectives | This course will cover: Definition of mental health, wellbeing and the mental health continuum Depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, and other diagnoses, including the impact of stigma Relationship between trauma and mental health Understanding coping methods used by people experiencing poor mental health including eating problems and self-harm Suicide in Scotland; statistics, groups at risk and ways to support Practical tips and advice on how to approach having a supportive conversation about mental health Maintaining our boundaries and limitations within the remit of our roles Exploring compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma as a supporter Practical strategies, tools and tips on supporting mental health
This course mentions suicide and self-harm. Suicide can be a difficult topic, especially for those who have been closely impacted by it. For those who have recently experienced thoughts of suicide or have been bereaved by suicide, please consider whether this course is suitable for you to attend at this time. This course does not offer crisis support. |
